The story behind the art

The voyageurs played a crucial role in the fur trade industry, transporting goods and furs over vast distances and connecting fur trade posts across the wilderness of Canada. Their endurance, strength, and skill in navigating the waterways were instrumental in the success of the fur trade.

The waterways were the highways, and the vehicle was the canoe, designed and perfected by the First Nations.

The voyageurs were renowned for their strength, endurance and, incredible speed in paddling a canoe. Setting out before sunrise, they maintained a rhythm.  Despite the harsh conditions and long days of paddling, the voyageurs sang songs to keep their spirits high and maintain their rhythm. These songs were often in French and reflected the hardships and joys of their lives on the fur trade routes. Shelter for the night was an overturned canoe, a bed of moss, and a blanket or furs for warmth. If the weather was bad, they erected a tarp as cover.

The legacy of the voyageurs lives on in the history and culture of Canada, showcasing the resilience and determination of those who braved the wilderness to build a new life in a challenging environment. Their contributions to the fur trade industry were essential in shaping the history of Canada and the development of the country as we know it today.
