The story behind the art

The Men who journeyed to Canada faced challenges and risks. They overcame the challenges by perseverance and adaptability, as they had found a new life, and a sense of belonging. They had discovered a freedom in the vast wilderness, and a new beginning in a land that had welcomed them with open arms.

They trapped and traveled deep into the wilderness to trade with Indigenous communities. As time passed, they began to see themselves as part of the new communities, blending their own culture with that of the Indigenous peoples. They embraced the customs and traditions of their new home, all while holding onto their own heritage.

They became good at hunting, canoeing, and fishing. Being brave also helped too, given the number of risks they faced. (injury, drowning, hunger, etc.)  They had to be physically fit and skilled negotiators as well.

They integrated well and married Indigenous women. Through this fusion of cultures, a new identity emerged – one that was uniquely Canadian, a blend of European and Indigenous influences. They were no longer just visitors in this land, but were now an integral part of it, contributing to its rich tapestry of diversity.
