the story behind the art
Green corn celebration & dance is an expression of Gratitude for a successful corn crop. Ceremony held after the harvest is a time to rekindle a sense of sacredness & a renewing of Life.
A time where old fires were put out, the village were cleaned, and worn or broken items were cleared out in a common heap and burned. The husk would be held when the firs corn crop became edible, giving a sense of renewal and forgiveness. This dance celebrated both the crop and the sense of community that shaped our lives including singing, dancing, and storytelling. During the dance the Old ones would say listen to the voices of Selu (corn mother) and feel her dancing around with us in celebration of Gratitude.
